Candied orange slices are a delightful treat that can be enjoyed on their own, used as a garnish for cakes, or added to desserts. These sweet and tangy slices are made by simmering orange rounds in sugar syrup until perfectly translucent.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium oranges, thinly sliced (about 1/8 inch thick)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract or a pinch of cinnamon for added flavor

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oranges:
Wash the oranges thoroughly and slice them into thin rounds, discarding the ends. Remove any seeds.
  2. Blanch the Slices:
Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the orange slices and blanch for 1 minute. Remove the slices and immediately transfer them to a bowl of ice water. Drain and set aside.
  3. Make the Syrup:
In a large skillet or saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Cook the Orange Slices:
Add the orange slices to the syrup in a single layer. Simmer on low heat for 40-60 minutes, flipping occasionally, until the slices become translucent.
  5. Dry the Slices:
Carefully transfer the candied slices to a wire rack lined with parchment paper. Allow them to dry at room temperature for 24 hours.
  6. Optional Coating:
Once dried, sprinkle the slices with granulated sugar or dip them in melted chocolate for a special treat.

Notes

  • Store the candied orange slices in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
  • They can also be frozen for longer storage (up to 3 months).
