Ingredients

  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup (40g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) buttermilk (or substitute with 1/2 cup milk + 1/2 tbsp vinegar)
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) hot water or brewed coffee (for deeper flavor)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8-inch round or square cake pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the buttermilk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.
  4. Gradually stir in the hot water or coffee until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin, but that’s normal.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Frost as desired and enjoy!

Notes

  • For an extra chocolatey experience, top with chocolate ganache or a simple chocolate buttercream frosting.
