Ingredients

Scale

For the Cookies:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp almond extract (optional)
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt

For the Icing:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp milk (adjust for desired consistency)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Green food coloring

For Decoration:

  • Assorted holiday sprinkles
  • Small edible stars

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using). Mix until combined.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  3. Chill the Dough:
Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or up to overnight) to make it easier to roll out.
  4. Roll and Cut:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll the chilled dough on a floured surface to about ¼-inch thickness. Use a Christmas tree-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the cookies and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for 8–10 minutes, or until the edges are just lightly golden. Let the cookies cool completely on a wire rack.
  6. Prepare the Icing:
In a medium bowl, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add green food coloring until the desired shade is achieved.
  7. Decorate the Cookies:
Spread or pipe the green icing onto the cooled cookies. Decorate with sprinkles and place a small edible star at the top of each tree. Allow the icing to set before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, try adding a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dough.
  • If you don’t have a tree-shaped cutter, you can create templates from parchment paper and cut around them with a knife.
