This creamy, savory hamburger gravy is a simple, budget-friendly comfort food classic. It’s rich, flavorful, and perfect for serving over mashed potatoes, rice, or biscuits.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 or leaner)
  • ½ small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional, for extra depth)
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Beef & Onion

    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion until the beef is browned and no longer pink. Drain excess grease if needed.
    • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  2. Make the Roux

    • Push the beef to one side of the skillet and melt the butter in the empty space.
    • Sprinkle in the flour and whisk it into the butter, cooking for about 1 minute until lightly golden.
  3. Make It Creamy

    • Slowly pour in the milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
    • Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, paprika, thyme, and garlic powder. Stir until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Serve & Enjoy

    • Spoon over mashed potatoes, rice, biscuits, or toast.
    • Garnish with parsley or extra black pepper, if desired.

Notes

Make It Richer: Use half milk and half heavy cream for a richer texture.

Thicker Gravy: Add an extra tablespoon of flour if you prefer a thicker consistency.

Flavor Boost: A splash of soy sauce or beef broth can add even more umami.
