These classic sugar cookies are soft, buttery, and easy to make. They’re perfect for any occasion and can be decorated with your favorite icing or enjoyed plain.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups (350g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough:

    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
    • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until smooth and creamy.
    • Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) until well combined.
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Shape the Cookies:

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them about 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
    • For a decorative touch, you can roll each dough ball in additional sugar before placing them on the baking sheet.
  • Bake:

    • Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges are just starting to turn golden.
    • Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a festive touch, sprinkle colored sugar or sprinkles on top before baking.
  • Ensure your butter is softened to room temperature for easier mixing and a smoother dough.
  • If you prefer a chewier cookie, slightly underbake them; for a crisper cookie, bake a minute or two longer.
