For the Chocolate Pudding:

  • 2 (3.9 oz) boxes instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 4 cups cold milk

For the Layers:

  • 2 cups whipped cream or whipped topping
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • 1/2 cup chocolate shavings or chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup crushed peppermint candies (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bake the Cake:
    • Prepare the chocolate cake according to the package instructions. Let it cool completely and crumble it into small pieces.
  2. Prepare the Pudding:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the pudding mix and cold milk until thickened. Chill for 5–10 minutes.
  3. Assemble the Trifle:
    • In a large trifle dish or individual serving cups, layer as follows:
      • Layer 1: Crumbled chocolate cake.
      • Layer 2: Chocolate pudding.
      • Layer 3: Whipped cream or whipped topping.
      • Repeat layers until the dish is full, finishing with whipped cream on top.
  4. Decorate:
    • Sprinkle mini marshmallows, chocolate shavings, and crushed peppermint candies (if using) on top.
  5. Chill and Serve:
    • Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to let the flavors meld together.
