Saltine Cracker Toffee, also known as “Christmas Crack,” is an easy and addictive treat made with buttery toffee, crisp crackers, and a rich chocolate topping. This sweet and salty dessert is perfect for holiday gifts or anytime you’re craving a simple yet satisfying snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Toffee Base:

  • 40 Saltine crackers (approximately one sleeve)
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

Chocolate Topping:

  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • Optional toppings: chopped nuts, sprinkles, crushed candy canes, or flaky sea salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking sheet with aluminum foil, extending the foil over the edges for easy removal. Spray lightly with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Layer the crackers: Arrange the Saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring the crackers touch but don’t overlap.
  3. Make the toffee: In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar over medium heat. Stir until the butter melts and the mixture begins to boil. Allow it to boil for 3 minutes without stirring, until the toffee is smooth and golden.
  4. Pour the toffee: Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the Saltine crackers, spreading it gently with a spatula to cover all the crackers.
  5. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes. The toffee will bubble but shouldn’t burn.
  6. Add the chocolate: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Wait for 2-3 minutes until the chocolate melts, then spread it evenly with a spatula.
  7. Add toppings: If desired, sprinkle your chosen toppings over the melted chocolate.
  8. Chill and break: Let the toffee cool completely at room temperature, then refrigerate for 1-2 hours to set. Once hardened, remove from the pan and peel off the foil. Break into pieces and enjoy!

Notes

  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week or in the freezer for longer storage.
  • For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate chips.
