Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2–4 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: Gel food coloring for decoration

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy, about 1–2 minutes.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of milk or heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt. Beat until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add more milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.
  • Divide the frosting into bowls and mix in gel food coloring if desired.
  • Spread or pipe onto cooled sugar cookies. Let the frosting set for 30 minutes before stacking or serving.

Notes

  • This recipe makes enough frosting for about 24 medium-sized sugar cookies.
  • To achieve a glossy finish, use heavy cream instead of milk.
  • Store any unused frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Let it come to room temperature and re-whip before using.
