Ingredients

Scale

For the French Toast:

  • 6 slices of brioche or challah bread
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk (or dairy-free alternative)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 tbsp butter (for frying)

For the Caramel Apple Topping:

  • 2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  • Prepare the French Toast Batter:
In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
  • Soak the Bread:
Dip each slice of brioche into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for about 10–15 seconds on each side. Set aside on a plate.
  • Cook the French Toast:
Heat 1 tbsp of butter in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Once melted, cook the bread slices for 2–3 minutes per side or until golden brown. Repeat with the remaining slices, adding more butter as needed. Keep warm.
  • Make the Caramel Apple Topping:
In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add apple slices, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft and caramelized.
  • Assemble and Serve:
Place the cooked French toast slices on a plate. Top with the warm caramel apple mixture and drizzle with caramel sauce. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free option, use almond milk and coconut cream.
  • Add a dollop of whipped cream or a sprinkle of powdered sugar for an extra treat.
  • This recipe pairs beautifully with a hot cup of spiced chai or coffee.
